In the Spirit of Ideas Worth Spreading

TEDx is a program created by TED of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TEDxTysons creates an opportunity for anyone with an idea, project or inspiring story to share it with the rest of the Tysons area – helping to connect, educate, inform and showcase our diverse and growing community.

At TEDx events a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos spark deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis and lack any commercial, religious or political agenda.

This is the first year that TEDxTysons has worked with Maker Faire NoVa and we are extremely pleased with our new working relationship. TEDxTysons will be helping us run the Speaker Series and providing expertise and people to help us record the event (both video and photography). TEDxTysons has also introduced us to several fascinating makers including an entire film festival (SmartPhilm Festival – films shot on smartphones) which will take place at Maker Faire NoVa in 2019. We could not be happier with our new community partner!

Maker Faire NoVa 2018 was an awesome success! It was a beautiful day full of making. Thanks to all our makers for sharing, guests for attending, volunteers for helping, George Mason University for hosting, sponsors for supporting, and our team for organizing. More pictures coming. Theo Nazz won Forged in Fire twice and lived to tell about it. Come hear what he learned about competition, publicity, and how his win affected him as an entrepreneur. Theo is a maker’s maker. He dives deep into the technical side of blade smithing and combines that with innovative new techniques like laser cutting and 3D printing to make blades that rise to the level of artwork.

Former journalist Bill Steinhardt will get the discussion rolling by interviewing Theo to get some juicy details from behind the scenes in Forged in Fire, and find out how Theo was able to use his success to start a blade smithing workshop in the heart of New York City. Then we will open it up to you to ask questions and get Theo talking about his knife making techniques, his business, and life as an entrepreneur in the cutthroat world of blade smithing.

And don’t forget we are raffling off one of Theo’s creations http://go.rallyup.com/theonazz

We are very excited to have the Theo Nazz back at the Faire this year! He will be outside, front and center forging away, accompanied by several fellow blacksmiths from our local maker space, NOVA Labs. But wait, there’s more 🙂 Theo is also raffling off a custom forged knife from his collection. Buy a raffle ticket online now or at the Faire and we will pull a random winner the day after (USPS delivery). Check it out! https://go.rallyup.com/theonazz

(all proceeds donated to NOVA Labs, a 501c3 non-profit maker space)

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia’s own Innovation Fund is generously supporting Maker Faire NoVa for another year and we are very grateful for their support! This year it is especially wonderful as they have also been instrumental in supporting the Mason Innovation Lab (MIX) where about a third of the Maker Faire NoVa will be held! Robotics, Cardboard Challenge, ROV’s, Take-A-Part and many more exciting exhibits will be in the MIX, so definitely put it on your roadmap for the Faire.

The Innovation Fund at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia invests in inventiveness, creativity and new designIt uses a venture philanthropy model of grant making in which donors to the Innovation Fund, in partnership with the Community Foundation board and staff, find investment opportunities in Northern Virginia that help:

  • Diversify the local economy
  • Launch the very first cyber security course of study in our local high schools
  • Level the playing field for disadvantaged youth
  • Promote grass roots innovation

The venture philanthropy model goes far beyond the writing of checks to address an immediate need. Grants from the Innovation Fund are truly “venture” in nature, supporting nascent programs that, but for the Innovation Fund support, may not have launched.  The Fund invests in community to help solve local problems, strategically partnering with local nonprofits and schools to launch promising, innovative programs and initiatives that have the potential to transform our region.

MakerFaire

To date, the Innovation Fund has helped launch the Mason Innovation Lab at George Mason University, launch cyber security courses of study in our local public schools, launch the NOVA Maker Faire in Reston that was attended by more than 3,000 visitors each year since 2014, and supported the Honey Bee Initiative at Mason’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Going forward, the Community Foundation is committed to partnering with our Innovation Fund donors for greater impact. All investments in local innovation through the Innovation Fund will therefore be informed by both the donors to the Innovation Fund and Community Foundation board and staff.
