Your Finest Hour - The Battle of Britain Experience

Justin Omps
I have been a maker all my life, starting when I helped my father rebuild an old MGB convertible. Since then I have earned two patents, designed and brought to market an inductive charging flashlight for SCUBA diving, and have recently been exploring 3D printing and rapid prototyping. When not researching and building equipment for the Filter Room simulation, I am rebuilding a 1957 Land Rover and finishing up a treehouse for my kids.

What inspired you to make this project?
I am a pilot, and was interested in the Battle of Britain. I read Peter Townsend's "Duel of Eagle," but instead of being fascinated by the stories of the pilots, I found myself intrigued by the description of the Dowding System organization that made victory of the Luftwaffe possible. The more I researched, the more I realized what a unique and groundbreaking organization the Dowding System was, especially the Filter Room, because it took ordinary people, put them under extreme pressure, and empowered them to make life and death decisions. This led me to talk to veterans who had served in these roles. The more I learned, the more I wanted to see how it worked. The only way to do that was to build it.
